Titia Estes is native of California, currently based in Los Angeles. She creates sculptural ceramic vessels based on the relationship between architecture and nature. Her impetus is to understand the similarities, as well as the contrast, between the structures of the city and the simple shapes in nature. Of course, both are based in geometric shapes. Whether the repetitive pattern of windows on a tall building, or the random stacking of a rock formation, both creations are organized and fit together as vital and vibrant forms. Influenced by both, Titia’s minimal use of glazes is intended to reveal the stony surface of the clay, emphasizing its beauty and feel.
